African Kale / Texel / Brassica carinata “Garlic Kale"
Brassica Carinata “Garlic Kale, Ethiopian Mustard,
Texsel Greens” .Use young leaves for salads, older ones for cooking. Brassica Carinata has been found by CSIRO ( the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation ) to be a useful organic control of nematodes. It reduces soil pathogens like fungi and is said to reduce weed regrowth. Highly recomend to use as a green mulch on Dahlia beds over the late Autumn through winter and early Spring to help reduce fungal issues as well as nemetodes which damage tubers. Another suggested use is as a green manure crop before planting susceptible crops like carrot, onion and cereals. Because the effects are produced as the brassica decomposes after being dug in, we recomend you allow the seeds to regrow for a few weeks after being harvested to eat, before simply slashing it and letting it regrow repeatedly.
Excellent taste when stir-fried quickly and has a hint of garlic without the after effects on our breath. Naturalises easily, just leave one plant to flower and produce seeds and you will never have to buy
seeds of this vegetable again. Easy cut and come
again cropping. Sow seeds direct to the location anytime. White cabbage butterfly larvae will eat the leaves but prefer other brassicas so damage is minimal. We also offer a bulk version, 12grams of seeds = roughly 3,500 seeds for green mulch or crop feed use. Please request by email.
Germination
Indoors surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover the seed with a sprinkling of soil, propagate or cover with a sheet of glass until germination occurs. Remove glass after germination and grow on. Directly, sow into a well-prepared seedbed 5mm deep, 30cm apart. Seeds germinate within 2 weeks.
