LARGE bag of Dahlia seeds
A wonderful blend of unchaffed dahlia seeds from my cut flower gardens. Due to the fact the seeds are not separated from the chaff ( the papery shell that encases them) , we supply a full small size zip lock seed bag to ensure the customer gets plenty of seeds. Please see included photo. Dahlia do not grow true to parents, so although the seeds will bloom and form tubers in their first season , there’s no way to know what colours, sizes or shapes they will be until they flower. They will take two to three years for the colour to “settle” so they may change appearance quite drastically in their second year. It pays to hang on to them for a couple of years before deciding on whether to remove them or keep them.
These are mixed seeds but some of the varieties harvested from were : Caitlins Joy, Tartan, Avignon, hapet coppery, isabel, my love, peaches n cream, black jack, Cafe supreme, cafe rose, cafe twist, cafe au lait , L.A.T.E , Shadow cat, rosemary webb and more. Ive added fresh photos of some of the dahlias from this past season. Tubers will only be available at our sale in Okaihau in november. We dont offer postage or pre sales for tubers, only purchase on the day.
Germination
After the last frost, sow the seeds and chaff in a trench in-ground the outdoors or in a large seedling tray in a sunny window and cover lightly. Keep warm and watch out for slugs and snails!
Once the true leaves form, you can prick them out to plant further apart. I use soda bottles cut in half. stake a stick first, then plant the seedling beside the stick, before placing the top half of the bottle over the stick to cover the seedling. the stick will prevent it from blowing away. The bottle acts as a cloche and will help keep them warm and prevent slugs and snails from destroying them!

Recipe
Did you know the tubers are edible? Heres a great use for the tubers that dont have eyes ( and therefore wont flower )
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1 cup of sugar (1 cup of natvia for sugar-free)
1 1/2 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 cup of cooking oil.
Combine thoroughly and then add:1 1/2 cups of unsifted flour
1/2 tsp. of Baking Powder
1/2 tsp. of Salt
1/2 tsp. of Baking Soda
1 1/2 tsp. of Cinnamon.
Mix well and then gently incorporate:1 cup of ground dahlia tubers (remember to peel them first)
1/2 cup of chopped nuts
1/2 cup of mini-chocolate chips.
Pour the mixture into a greased loaf pan and bake at a temperature of 175 degrees Celsius for approximately 1 hour, or less if using a larger loaf pan. The bread is ready when a toothpick inserted comes out clean. For smaller pans, adjust the baking time to around 40-45 minutes. This quantity of batter is sufficient for making 2 or 3 small loaves.
