Pennisetum glaucum ‘Purple Baron’ Black Foxtail Millet
Seedlings form as a pale green colour and gain the dark leaves once mature. The outstanding coloured foliage and seed heads can easily reach 1 m in height.
A fantastic plant for either ornamental or edible usage, they be grown in a tub or transplanted into a full-sun situation in the garden to add texture and height to a border. I recommend growing these in combination with the variegated foliage of our Japonica Tri coloured corn, for a beautiful contrast.
Millets are summer growing grasses and need above 18°C soil temperatures to thrive.
The ripe seed heads dry well and hold together for years with seed intact so are useful in dry flower arrangements. The seed heads are also a favourite bird food.
The nutritious seeds are edible raw or cooked. They can be ground into a flour, roasted, or steamed for use in fermented and non-fermented breads, porridges, snack foods, and beverages.
Germination
Sow 4-5 seeds per small pot and germinate seeds at room temperature or above in early October for planting out in mid-November. Individual plants do not transplant well so multiple sow seeds which also gives a fuller plant.
