Pittosporum turneri
This very rare and endangered new Zealand native grows as a narrow and upright (to 7m) small leafed tree. The short, thin branches are wiry and the dark green leaves are long lived and persistent. They make excellent screens as they never require pruning and can be planted close together or grown singly for their stately vertical structure. The photo shows three 10 year old seedlings, two of which have flowered and set seeds for the first time. Plants make excellent tub specimens and seem not to mind being pot-bound.
Seeds take months to germinate and are best sown in a flat or large pot and left outdoors in mostly shade until seedlings appear. Our test germination had the seeds sown in March which started to germinate in July. A normal potting mix is suitable. It has been written that germination takes from 3 to 12 months.
We believe we are the only source of seeds for this species world-wide.
