Plantago major “Rubrifolia” (Red plantain)

Easy to grow medicinal plant used for centuries by Old World
peoples. Search the internet for the dozens of traditional uses.
Young leaves are edible raw or cooked. Makes a very
ornamental tub plant on its own. Seedlings grow quickly and
after 6 months the plant can be as large as the one pictured.
Grow in full sun for best colour but can tolerate lots of shade in
which case the leaves will be only faintly reddish.
The seeds are small and can be sown on top of course gravel
where they will settle in among the grains once watered.
Seedlings can be grown at any time of the year but do best in
Spring.
